Celery might not be something that tops your grocery list, but this vegetable adds crunch to salads, subtle depth to soups, and freshness to stir-fries. Its versatility extends to juices and smoothies, offering a hydrating, nutrient-packed boost. Moreover, its use extends beyond the kitchen, as celery can aid in various health conditions, making it a true powerhouse in the produce aisle.
Cape Town horticulturalist Nomfusi Ntsobi says celery is low in calories and high in volatile oils, including carotenoids and flavonoids.
Various parts of the plant contain essential oils, beta-carotene, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, along with fibres, silica, chlorophyll, sodium, and folic acid, explains Ntsobi.
She notes that several parts of the plant produce therapeutic formulations in traditional medicine due to their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, anticancer, gastrointestinal, and antispasmodic properties.
She adds that celery is considered very important in different regions as its economic value globally increases due to its use in treating high blood pressure.

Nutritional and health benefits
According to Ntsobi, studies have reported that these plants are also used as immunosuppressants to treat many ailments such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, and other infectious diseases.
“Interestingly, celery seeds have proved to be very useful for joints, muscles, and detoxification of the human body.”
The plant also has nerve stimulant and sedation properties, which have been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, adds Ntsobi.
Nondyebo Mgoboza, head chef at Bertha House in Mowbray, Cape Town, says celery enhances several dishes, from soups and stews to snacks, vegetable stocks, garnish and salads.
Celery-magic in the kitchen
Celery adds vibrant colour and a crunchy texture to stews, and helps to thicken the dish, Mgoboza explains.
“Celery sticks make a healthy snack when paired with a dip or peanut butter.”
Finely chopped celery can also enhance salads and add a special touch to sandwiches. Moreover, by incorporating a bit of chopped celery into dishes like egg mayo and chicken mayo, you can create visually appealing and delicious meals, according to Mgoboza.
