In the heart of Mzansi, Ashley Uys’ life story unfolds with resilience and determination that transcends boundaries.
Growing up in Bishop Lavis on the Cape Flats, the CEO of Medical Diagnostech (Pty) Ltd shares the challenges that shaped his journey, a narrative that mirrors the struggles faced by many in the country.
Born in difficult circumstances, he experienced the pervasive issues of poverty, gangsterism, and substance abuse that plagued his community. Despite the odds, he found solace and inspiration in sports and science.
A turning point
The move to Belhar at the age of 10 marked a turning point where Ashley discovered his passion for science and sports, using them as pillars to navigate the harsh realities of his environment.
His commitment to staying busy and excelling propelled him forward, revealing an unwavering determination to rise above his circumstances.
His journey took a poignant turn when personal tragedies struck, including the loss of his sister and his own battle with substance abuse. These experiences fuelled a deep-seated motivation to make a positive impact on the world.
At 23, he pitched a product aimed at combating substance abuse to a pharmaceutical company, securing a national contract that marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey.
The journey, however, was not without its share of trails. He shares the traumas and insecurities that inspired him to channel his energy into positive pursuits.
“I had to learn how to be present and patient. I was running too fast,” he admits. Recognising the importance of emotional intelligence, he emphasises the role it plays in navigating the complexities of business and life.
Medical Diagnostech (Pty) Ltd, under Uys’ leadership, has become a beacon of innovation. The company’s groundbreaking work includes the development of South Africa’s first Covid-19 antigen and antibody tests. Beyond Covid-19 testing, Medical Diagnostech (Pty) Ltd’s innovations extend to an array of projects. The company has developed the Bio-Odometer, a USB dongle that transforms smartphones into diagnostic tools for various diseases.
Additionally, the Oculus ID technology, originally designed for substance abuse detection, has unveiled unforeseen applications, including non-invasive diabetes testing.
Uys’ vision extends beyond traditional healthcare models. His commitment to accessibility is evident in initiatives like supplying communal institutions, schools, mosques, and churches directly, cutting out intermediaries and ensuring affordability.
In his story, there is a continuous thread of gratitude and faith. “All glory to God for getting us to this point, and now we trust in the process,” he affirms.
His life journey is not just about overcoming obstacles; it’s about using every challenge as a catalyst for positive change, a testament to the enduring spirit of a South African visionary.
