Self-care for men isn’t just about looking good – it’s about feeling great and owning it! Whether it’s a fresh shave, a quick skincare routine, or even just taking time to kick back with a good book or binge-worthy series, self-care is all about finding what makes you feel like your best self.
It’s the small things that add up, like hitting the gym, trying out a new grooming product, or just grabbing a moment to relax and recharge. Self-care isn’t just a trend; it’s a way to show yourself some love and boost your confidence.
Redefining masculinity
For Sinethemba Cekiso from Khayelitsha, Cape Town, self-care means wearing nice clothing, applying a good cologne, and taking care of himself through daily hygiene.
He believes self-care extends beyond appearance and includes holistic practices like going to the gym, getting a massage, or having a manicure.
“Journaling, meditation, visiting the dentist, prioritising sleep, eating well, and regular health check-ups are all self-care practices I’ve been following and more,” Cekiso explains.
He adds that these routines boost his confidence. “When you look good, you feel good, and that alone can make your day brighter and boost your mood.”
Embrace it!
Self-care practices for men play a crucial role in breaking down the idea that men need to hide their emotions or stick to tough, traditional expectations, says Darion Adams, founder of The AIM Society and an artist from Manenberg, Cape Town.
Adams explains that embracing a gentler side allows men to interact with their environment in more thoughtful and compassionate ways.
“By giving themselves permission to be softer and kinder, men can better express their needs and desires and communicate more effectively.”
As a dancer, Adams views dancing as more than just an art form. For them, it’s an emotional healing process, a way to listen to and reconnect with oneself.
Along with dancing, Adams journals, engages in community safe spaces and practises self-care. An entire day dedicated to skin, hair, and body care is one of his favourite routines.

A smart approach
Many men are taught from a young age to be strong and in control, which often leads them to suppress emotions and avoid seeking help, says Sihle Ntlangu, a counselling psychologist from Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
Ntlangu explains that this can result in internalised trauma and stress carried into adulthood. He adds that overcoming these barriers involves reshaping societal norms around masculinity and emphasising the importance of mental health.
Encouraging open conversations about emotions and normalising therapy as tools for self-awareness and personal growth are key steps.
Beneficial practices include talking about feelings with trusted individuals, seeking professional help to understand mood triggers, and engaging in physical activities that boost mental health.
“These practices can lead to a greater sense of self-awareness and resilience, ultimately improving the quality of life.”
Taking care of yourself
Ntlangu says practical self-care strategies for men may include:
Mental well-being
- Interact with others (outings, leisure time, men’s gatherings).
- Practise self-kindness and self-forgiveness.
- Set reasonable expectations and learn to say “no” when necessary.
- Get organised with a balanced schedule of work, sleep, relationships, and recreation.
Spiritual well-being
- Develop a routine that nurtures your mind and soul, such as meditation, prayer, or self-exploration.
- Find quiet time for reflection and balance family, social, and work demands with personal time.
- Engage in hobbies and activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as yoga or exploring nature.
Physical well-being
- Eat a balanced diet for energy.
- Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, jogging, or swimming.
- Prioritise sleep and visit the doctor when feeling unwell.
- Maintain a skincare and grooming routine.
