As the electricity outage continues to grip the Central Karoo and parts of the Overberg in the Western Cape, health concerns are mounting following a tragic incident that claimed the life of an 18-year-old individual and hospitalised another adult. Premier Alan Winde, along with senior members of the Western Cape government, were briefed by Eskom on the ongoing situation this morning.
The Western Cape government is closely monitoring the situation with a focus on ensuring the health and safety of affected residents. Winde emphasised the importance of prioritising access to safe drinking water, food security, and critical healthcare services.
The fatal incident occurred when individuals attempted to power a spaza shop in Leeu-Gamka using a generator indoors, leading to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Winde extended his condolences to the family and urged residents to adhere to safety guidelines when using alternative power sources such as generators.
More areas affected
Eskom reported progress in addressing the outage, with essential construction material delivered to the affected areas. Additionally, efforts are underway to restore power to regions like Hawston, which was also affected.
Western Cape minister of local government, environmental affairs and development planning, Anton Bredell, stressed the urgency of restoring power to affected communities after visiting Prince Albert and Laingsburg. The government has deployed generators to support essential services such as drinking water and sewage management in these areas.
However, the use of generators in poorly ventilated areas poses significant health risks, according to the provincial department of health. Carbon monoxide poisoning, a silent killer, can result from the improper use of generators, open fires, or gas appliances indoors. Symptoms include headache, weakness, shortness of breath, and loss of consciousness. Immediate medical attention is crucial if carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected.
The Western Cape government continues to work alongside Eskom to address the outage and ensure the well-being of affected residents, emphasising the importance of prioritising health and safety measures during this challenging time.
