In Mzansi’s dynamic academic environment, Dr Charlene Kimar stands as a beacon of excellence and innovation. Born and raised in Grassy Park, Cape Town within a nurturing family of educators, her journey into the realm of science and discovery was paved with encouragement and opportunity.

Reflecting on her upbringing, she shares, “Both my parents were teachers and they always encouraged my brother, my sister, and myself to study further.”

With a keen interest in science and biology ignited during her years at Bergvliet High School, Kimar started a journey of academic exploration that would start her career trajectory.

Fascinated by science

An encounter with a science student, Ashley Uys, at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) during a job shadowing experience in grade 11 proved serendipitous leading to employment at Medical Diagnostech where she currently works as the research and development manager.

Kimar’s academic quest started with a bachelor’s, honours and master’s degree in biotechnology from UWC, providing her with a solid foundation in molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry.

Subsequently, she pursued a PhD in physiological sciences at Stellenbosch University, specialising in cardio-metabolic research.

Recalling her academic journey, she remarks, “My fascination for biology grew during high school, and I learned about the potential applications of biotechnology in solving real-work problems.”

Throughout her academic pursuits, Kimar’s dedication and scholarly achievements were recognised through prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Medical Research Council master’s and doctoral scholarships, the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Award, and the National Research Foundation doctoral scholarship.

These accolades, she says, “Provided the necessary financial support and boosted my confidence, motivating me to excel in my studies.”

A passion for gender equality

Moving into the professional world, her current role as research and development manager at Medical Diagnostech involves overseeing new product development and commercialisation. She leads a dynamic team of researchers with diverse skill sets, navigating challenges such as resource constraints and regulatory hurdles. Despite these obstacles, Kimar’s resilience and collaborative spirit drive innovation and progress within the organisation.

Beyond her professional endeavours, Kimar is passionate about promoting gender equality and diversity in the workplace. She emphasises the importance of providing equal opportunities for women in leadership roles and encourages aspiring scientists to explore their interest in science diligently.

As she continues to trailblaze pathways in biotechnology and physiological sciences, her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring scientists across South Africa. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, she exemplifies the transformative power of curiosity, perseverance, and lifelong learning in shaping a successful career in science.
