As we grow older, our bodies and minds may change, but with the right strategies, we can maintain our physical and mental health.

Gauteng-based general practitioner and public health enthusiast Dr Thakhani Khorommbi explores the journey of healthy ageing in this episode. She says as we age, certain changes can affect multiple systems in our bodies.

“As we age, we experience a range of changes. Some are visible externally but others are internal. These include changes to the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, metabolism, skin, cognitive function, and immune system.”

The natural ageing process

According to her, it is important to be able to distinguish between the natural ageing process and potential health concerns.

“With normal ageing, there tends to be gradual changes that will slowly progress, like joint stiffness or occasional forgetfulness.”

“However, more sudden or severe symptoms such as rapid changes in cognition, such as sudden confusion, intense pain, or abrupt weight loss, may indicate a deeper health issue beyond normal ageing.”

One of the most common mistakes people make as they age, Khorommbi notes, is neglecting physical activity. She explains that maintaining health during the ageing process requires more than just medical intervention; it involves actively taking care of one’s body and mind.

“There is a benefit to staying active because it helps maintain your muscle mass, your joint flexibility, and also improves your cardiovascular health and an individual’s mental well-being, so simple activities like walking or yoga can be quite beneficial.”

Khorommbi also underscores the importance of regular health screenings for early detection and disease prevention.

“Having regular health screenings offers several key benefits, like the detection of diseases, the prevention of complications of those diseases, and just overall peace of mind.”

She advises prioritising screenings for cardiovascular health, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks, as well as glucose tests.
