Change is a constant in life, yet, even when we know it’s coming, change can be unsettling. This is true even for positive changes, as we are bound to lose the familiar and have to adjust to a new set of circumstances.
In this episode, we chat with Gauteng-based psychologist Siphesihle Mwelase who explores some valuable insights on coping with change.
Our conversation opens with a relatable description of change, as Mwelase explains that “change is the ability to adjust or to adapt to your current circumstances. Are you able to adjust to the current challenges or what’s in front of you at this particular time and point?”
The good and bad
He says, “With change, it’s bound to impact how you feel, and your emotions tremendously. It can heighten your anxiety and your stress levels, maybe you’re seeing yourself now at a point where you’re overthinking. You’re doubting yourselves. So a lot of these kinds of emotions come into your mind. I mean… a roller coaster of emotion because it’s not just one specific emotion. You may get flooded by multiple emotions at the same time.”
Mwelase assures us that change isn’t inherently negative. He says it can be a discovery of yourself.
“It won’t be easy. It’s a process as well you know, but it is doable. Change requires a new version of yourself. Look at it as an opportunity for you to construct a new version of yourself, because it requires you to adapt, to think differently, and to move differently from what you’re used to.”
In this episode, Mwelase also discusses:
- The emotional roller coaster of change.
- Healthy resistance to change and a fear that’s holding you back.
- Healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with change.
