There is no time like the beginning of the new year to find ways to improve our lives. But how do we make it a truly better year than the last? New Health for Mzansi podcast host, Candice Khumalo, chats with clinical psychologist Rebaabetswe Mwelase about things to consider for an amazing year.

In the conversation, packed with actionable advice and inspiring insights, Mwelase covers everything from self-reflection to goal setting and shares ways how to make progress in the new year without feeling overwhelmed.

According to Mwelase, unforeseen circumstances are one of the biggest roadblocks that cause the positive outlook we may have for a better year not to succeed as the year progresses.

Dealing with the unexpected

“When we’re setting up our vision boards and writing down all our goals, we don’t plan for the things that might steer us away from the goals that we’re setting out.”

She further explains that another big roadblock is living in a social media age where most of what is captured on social media is only the final product and does not show what happens behind the scenes. “Be more descriptive, more realistic, and more specific in how you’re setting your goals,” she says.

Mwelase also reminds us that a better year is not about perfection but about progress. She encourages people to be kinder to themselves and celebrate the small wins as well.

In this episode, she also unpacks five important things to consider for a better year. By carefully considering these areas, she believes one can lay the foundation for a fulfilling and better year.
