Knowing when it’s time to walk away from a relationship is not always easy, but staying in a relationship that drags you down can hold you back from the happiness and fulfilment you deserve.
In this episode, we chat with Johannesburg-based relationship coach Tsholofelo Mngxali, who emphasises that walking away from a relationship is never an easy decision. It requires introspection, self-reflection, and the courage to prioritise your happiness and well-being.
“As human beings, we can get attached, and it’s not always easy to leave. You need that atmosphere to reflect on the relationship and if it’s really serving your purpose. So it’s very important to do introspection,” she says.
Work on yourself
“If you feel your emotional and mental state is being compromised, that is one of the signs to exit an unhealthy or toxic relationship. If it’s also wrongdoing on your part, you need to work on yourself as well, so that if it can be remediated, you are able to not bring those toxic traits back into the relationship.”
As a relationship coach, she discusses the importance of recognising when a relationship becomes toxic, unfulfilling, or detrimental to our mental and emotional health.
In her discussion, she explains the warning signs and non-negotiable indications that suggest it might be time to move on. Additionally, she guides distinguishing between temporary obstacles that can be surmounted and fundamental issues that may be difficult to overcome.
“Plan your exit as an individual; think about it in a practical state. Also, ask yourself if you’re willing to live the rest of your life in that current situation of your relationship and if the answer is no, then that is the key to opening that gate that you have locked yourself in.”
Throughout this episode, Mngxali underlines the common concerns and barriers that arise when contemplating the decision to walk away.
