Despite its name, the snake plant has nothing to do with attracting serpents. Instead, it adds a touch of style to your living space while packing some serious benefits. Known for its air-purifying superpowers, this plant helps keep your indoor air fresh and free of toxins, making it a favourite for anyone looking to zhoosh up their home environment.
For Siya Zulu from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, keeping snake plants is more than just a hobby; it reflects his deep appreciation for nature’s beauty and the benefits it brings to his living space.
“Snake plants have a special place in my heart. They are not just plants to me but are companions that bring a sense of calm and freshness to my space. They help keep the air clean and the atmosphere tranquil.”
Zulu says he waters his snake plants just enough and places them in spots where they get the right amount of sunlight, which is a balance he believes keeps them healthy and happy.
Bringing nature into your home
“Having snake plants around me is like having a piece of nature indoors. I hope more people see the value in having plants like snake plants in their homes. They are simple, yet they make such a big difference.”
Agronomist Bongani Ndhlovu from Johannesburg mentions how snake plants are widely used as decorative indoor plants due to their striking upright leaves and architectural shape, adding a modern and stylish touch to any room.
“Snake plants are excellent air purifiers, capable of removing toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides from the air. This makes them contribute to better respiratory health and overall well-being.”
Ndhlovu shares the following benefits of snake plants:
- They are very low maintenance and can thrive with minimal care.
- They tolerate low light conditions and irregular watering.
- They can adapt to various light conditions, from bright indirect light to low light, although they prefer indirect light, making them suitable for different rooms in the house.
- They release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and also release moisture into the air. This can help increase humidity levels in dry indoor environments.
- It is particularly beneficial for respiratory health and preventing conditions such as dry throat and cough.
“Snake plants, like many other indoor plants, release oxygen at night instead of carbon dioxide. This can improve air quality and help promote better sleep by creating a more restful environment,” Ndhlovu adds.
“Studies have shown that spending time around indoor plants, including snake plants, can reduce stress levels and promote relaxation.”

Benefits and drawbacks
According to him, snake plants have also been found to exhibit antibacterial properties. They can help to reduce levels of airborne bacteria, potentially lowering the risk of infections and improving general health.
“In Feng Shui, snake plants are believed to bring positive energy and good luck to a space. Placing them in certain areas of the home or office is thought to enhance harmony and prosperity.”
Despite the benefits, he notes how snake plants contain saponins, which can be mildly toxic if ingested by pets or humans. Symptoms he highlights may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
“Although snake plants are drought-tolerant, they can suffer if overwatered. Too much water can lead to root rot and other fungal diseases. It’s important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings and to use well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging.”
Taking care of a snake plant
Ndhlovu adds that snake plants are sensitive to cold temperatures and can be damaged if exposed to drafts or temperatures below 10°C for extended periods.
“Snake plants are best suited for indoor environments or outdoor locations with mild climates.
“While they are relatively resistant to pests, they can occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or scales. Regular inspection of the plant and prompt treatment with appropriate methods such as insecticidal soap or neem,” he advises.
Pretoria-based horticulturist Thabo Movundlela says what makes this succulent plant stand out is its ease of care, purifying air, low maintenance, and handling ability to a variety of lighting conditions. It can be used as an indoor plant or even in outdoor areas.
“The snake plant is effective against allergies, headaches, and eye irritations, and it removes toxic pollutants and boosts mental health.”
“In some instances, it can be drunk to balance and improve blood circulation, thus improving the oxygen intake in the human body. However, large doses can cause nausea and vomiting.”
Since they are foliage plants, Movundlela says they can be grown any time of the year and season.
“Snake plants can thrive in any lighting conditions; however, they grow well under semi-shade to full sun and low water.”
“They grow as a bunch type, so in spring they will need to be divided so that they can always look visually appealing.”
