In the realm of health and fitness, the saying that summer bodies are sculpted during the winter months has gained considerable traction. With winter around the corner, Health For Mzansi speaks to a fitness guru about whether this notion is true.

With years of experience in the fitness industry and a passion for helping individuals achieve their health and wellness goals, Lufuno Nyembe from Johannesburg sheds light on this popular fitness notion.

“By summer body, people mean revealing their bodies. So reveal a body that you like, one that you want for yourself, and one that you’re comfortable with. Not everyone has to be skinny to have a summer body. Not everyone has to have a six-pack to have a summer body.”

Fitness important year-round

“When it comes to body positivity, it’s you aligning your body goals with you. It’s what you want for yourself. It’s what you find attractive for you, not the next person. So now, when it starts being about the next person, that’s where the body positivity goes out.”

Furthermore, he mentions that one can use the saying that summer bodies are made in winter as motivation, but it needs to be sustainable.

“Remember, for you to get started, you first need to be motivated, and then, when you’re motivated you love how you feel, how you look, and the results that come with it, and discipline starts to kick in. So now, when you’re in the discipline phase, it’s much easier for you to stay through summer and winter, and that has a long-term benefit. So don’t only train in the winter, just for summer.”

In this episode, Nyembe also speaks about:

  • What it truly means to have a summer body.
  • Benefits of using winter as a base-building period for fitness.
  • Navigating the pressure to achieve a certain summer body.
  • How to maintain motivation and a positive mindset towards health and fitness throughout the year.
